Master Warrant Officer Athal “Sandy” Stratford Haley
May 20th, 1932 – October 13th, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Master Warrant Officer Athal Stratford Haley ‘Sandy” on October 13, 2023, at the age of 91.
He was the son of Joseph Marvin Haley and Mary Emma Jones. Athal was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Dorothy Haley (Hutchings), his eldest daughter Donna Haley, his son Calvin Haley, seven brothers, Alvin, Alec, Chesley, James, Ronald, Richard and Leonard also six sisters, Winifred, Agnes, Louise, Rose, Patricia, Francis and one baby sister.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Armstrong, one daughter, Dorothy Arlene Haley (Jarvis), one grandson, Josh Haley-Seneshen and five granddaughters, Samantha Haley-Seneshen, Ariel Haley-Seneshen, Amy Alward, Hilary Alward and Theresa Haley. There are six great granddaughters and three great grandsons. His is also survived by one brother, Theodore and three sisters Theresa, Lillian and Barbara.
In his retired years, Athal enjoyed many hobbies including playing cards with his friends, square dancing, going on bus tours with his wife and listening to music, especially the fiddle. He adored spending time with his grandchildren and most of all getting to know his great grandchildren.
Athal “Sandy” Haley proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 30 years from 1954 to 1983. He started his service with the Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment in 1954. In 1968, he went on to serve with the Canadian Airborne Regiment in Edmonton. He completed his career with Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He served numerous duties including Aldershot, Gagetown, Sussex, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Halifax and several U.N. tours including Cyprus, Indo China and Egypt. During his time with the Canadian Armed Forces, he received many medals for his service including United Nations Medal (Cyprus), United Nations Emergency Force Medal (Middle East), International Commission for Supervision and Control Service Medal (Indo-China), Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal 1977, Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp and Parachute Badge.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, where visitation will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 4 to 7PM. The funeral service will be held Friday, October 20th at 2:00PM at Trinity Anglican Church (853 Main Street, Sussex NB).
