Dear Elly and Janet,
I thoroughly enjoyed my conversations with “Uncle Athal”. We both found delight in the history of Europe, the Middle East and most recently the state of New Brunswick and US current affairs. He was such a knowledgeable and progressive thinker of past and current times for sure!!
It has been my pleasure to have known this strong man and patriotic veteran who displayed such knowledge, perspective and humour in every conversation that we shared. I remember how excited he was to announce his engagement to you, Elly and how I’m sure he “counted in his mind” every step of his square dancing routines as he tried to keep up with your sashaying and light steps during the reels!
I was so pleased to be able to have shared Janet’s last visit with him and was perhaps a “little” envious of his new Lexus! He took great delight in showing me all its wonderful features while displaying that pleased little smile of his (that Janet and Agnes also displayed by the way) that he displayed whenever you or Janet were on the scene.
My deepest condolences are sent to you,Janet and your families.
Please know that have the times spent with “Uncle Athal” and with you, Elly will always be treasured moments for me and that I feel blessed to be able to call you both , dear friends.❤️

Our profound condolences at the time. Sandy was a pure gem. I first met him in the early 1980's when he was posted to CFB Halifax, being a Solider in the midst of the Navy was I'm sure a difficult time for him, but his sheer determination and my I say stubbornness saw him through. As a side note, I being a young Leading Seaman at the time and Sandy being the MWO in charge of the living quarters, he would monitor the dress in the dinning hall one day he chastised me for not wearing a collared shirt but let 3 French lads walk by in hockey sweaters....I pleaded my case to no avail as he put it I'm dealing with you right now, not them!!
I next ran across Sandy when he came to work at SJRCC I relayed the above story to him and we both had a good laugh. I enjoyed many a card game and conversation with Sandy and a few dust up's while at the jail, he would not back away from anyone, a man of conviction, duty, loyality and honour!!
He was kind and loyal to those whom he befriended. May you take comfort knowing we share in your loss and strength from our prayers.
I often recall one of the many little ditties he would proclaim, and smile as I remember him. We had the occasion to see him at Mama Georges several years back.
Sincerely,
Paul and Rena Smith

Athal was a good man. The kind of man who would give you the shoes off his feet if he thought you needed them. The kind who valued family above all else, to the point some might even say too much. He was the sort of man who would defend not only his country and his home, and people abroad all the world over; so broad was his heart he'd willingly fight for those who bore no shared roots, resemblance, creed or country, all just to give them hope for a brighter tomorrow,
Into his eighties, his was still the firmest handshake I've ever felt.
I regret not knowing him better, or having more to say, but he took care of his family, and I was honored, if only briefly, to be considered in some way a part of it.
To those of you who knew him far better, my condolences for his loss. May we all look to his example in trying to be something more for each other in these trying times.
