Obituary of James Bernard Hanlon

It is with great sadness that the family of James Bernard “Jim” Hanlon announce his passing which occurred on October 5, 2024, at the Loch Lomond Village, Saint John, NB.  Born on July 4, 1942, in Saint John, NB, he was the son of the late Edward and Eleanor (O’Neill) Hanlon.

Jim was a firefighter, first joining the Saint John Fire Department in the early 1960s.  He served the Department for 33 years making many life long friends. He ascended through the ranks and retired as Deputy Chief in 1997.

Jim was a well-respected member of the village of Norton and a pillar to his faith community of Sacred Heart Parish.

Jim was the epitome of love to his family and he showed this every day of his life. His great love was Mary, his “Rose of Tralee”. It was apparent to all who knew Jim that he loved Mary, loved God, and loved his children.

His grandchildren were the joy in his world during his retirement years and he was happiest when he and Mary were taking them to an activity or just playing a game of 45's at the kitchen table.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Mary Hanlon (Hourihan) of Norton, NB; children: Mary Ellen Hanlon (Mauro) of Norton, NB, Stephen Hanlon (Maureen) of Saint John, NB, Peter Hanlon (Mary) of Quispamsis, NB, Margaret Hanlon (Tim) of Ontario, Maureen Hanlon (Ryan) of Quispamsis, NB and Kathleen Riecken (David) of Hampton, NB; grandchildren: Rebecca, Laura, Hilary, Bennett, Matthew, Stephen, James, Liam, Connor, Sarah, Charlotte, Ryan and Maggie; brothers: Cyril Hanlon, Paul Hanlon (Eleanor) and Patrick Hanlon (Sharron); sisters: Doreen Marcon and Anne McNamara (Michael); as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brothers: Gerard, Louis, Maurice and Francis Hanlon; and sisters: Connie Winchester, Mary Conway and Helen Vickers.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Center (506-839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 7, from 6 to 8pm and Tuesday, October 8, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 11:00AM from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norton, NB. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
