Obituary of Doug Smith
It is with great sadness that the family of John Douglas “Doug” Smith announce his passing which occurred on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at his home in Belleisle, NB. Born in Saint John, NB, on January 1, 1949, the first New Year’s Baby of 1949, he was the son of the late Curtis Anderson and K. Margaret Smith. Doug is survived by his first cousins that he considered his brothers and sisters: Betty, Bill, Eleanor, Patty, Cathy (predeceased), Phyllis, Donna, Kaye, Lloyd, and May; second cousins: Peter and Paul; many cousins from the Anderson family; as well as other extended family and friends. Doug was predeceased by his loving grandparents William Aubrey “Bobby” and May Eleanor “Maysie” Smith; cousin Cathy; second cousin Rosina; and uncle Donald and aunt Margaret Smith.
Doug was a friend, other sibling, uncle, cousin, driving instructor, chauffer, jokester and so much more.
He came to live with his grandparents at an early age, working on, and eventually taking over the family farm.
He went on to become a man of many trades; farmer, woodsman, trucker, but he was never able to master the skill of carpentry, although he did succeed in proving that tools were made to be thrown, not used! He travelled the continent as a long haul trucker, seeing the world and telling of his adventures. He was an avid reader of Louis Lamour in the little spare time that he had. His one passion in life was his horses. He liked them more than people most of the time.
No one escaped his jokes and teasing. Everyone was fair game for the chewing tobacco molasses candy and offers of empty packs of Doublemint gum. It was an honour to be a part of his life. Doug will be missed by all, but we are sure he is happy driving a beautiful team of horses somewhere.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s Funeral Home (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB.
