To Lillis and the Reid family;
I want to send condolences to you all upon learning of Peter's death. I have memories and friendship of Peter during the years at school in Bloomfield, and as members of the Bloomfield Boys Scout troop. I remember Peter's mother and dad and the active Reid family of Peter's numerous brothers and sisters. I recall labouring in summer with the berry pickers at Ivan's strawberry plantation.
Those memories come again when friends pass away. My thoughts and prayers are of you as you mourn your loss.
Sincerely, Innis McCready

Memories of Uncle Pete!
When I think of Uncle Pete (and Aunt Lil), I think of freshly cut Christmas trees, blue berries, tobogganing on the Big Hill on winter days; fishing trips to Lackie's Hole on PEI; staying at Aunt Laura and Uncle Keir's cottage at Mill River with all of us "camping out together" and getting in trouble for jumping off the neighbour's speed boats tied up below; I will never forget the time we went skiing at Poley Mountain-my first time ever on skiis and Booby Booth took me right to the top; I always loved our outings to St John, Sussex and Hampton. You always had a funny story and could always get us to laugh. So many memories and so glad we had you in our lives! Much love, Judy

To Peter's Family.
Please accept My condolence on your loss of Peter. I have known Peter and Lilas for many years as a member of the Kings County Historical Society. Peter always had a unique item from history to bring to meetings. Lilas always had a great story. Plant sales were special events with Peter and Lilas as auctioneers.Their sense of humour was greatly appreciated. Peter was a member of the Riverbank Cemetery Committee for years. I worked with Peter's sister, Nancy Waters, on the Reid-Allaby family history until we lost her a few years ago unexpectedly. Peter's grandparents, Charles Haddon Spurgeon and Christine Henderson (Budge) Allaby rest in Salt Springs Cemetery with many Alllaby relatives. Peter's brother Ian and wife Betty have a Stone in Salt Springs Cemetery as well. Peter was a gentleman who will be missed by many.
Sincerely
Barbara F. Pearson

Dear Lil and Family,
How sad we were to hear we lost such a great neighbour to the enemy that is death! We have really enjoyed getting to know Peter over the past year and have boasted to all our friends about having such amazing neighbours. From offering us wood in the middle of winter to plowing us a garden last May… you have both been so hospitable! Our garden from this time on will be called “Peter’s Garden”.

Vicki and I send heartfelt condolences to the family. We had the privilege of meeting Peter during visits to Bill Wendy Ryan and Scott. Peter was always happy to extend invitations and add to his table. We loved those events filled with great food great stories . whether it was his famous turkey or even the odd lobster we were made to feel as part of the family. My brother Bill would always speak of peter as his best friend hunting buddy and father wrapped up in one person. Such a loss that he has moved on, but also such a privilege to all those who have had a chance to meet him, know him or be a part of his extended family. May his stories and memories last forever.

I am Peter’s older brother by 6 years
My earliest recollection of Peter was when he was in ca. 1935, lying flat on his back on a raised bed in the middle of the family kitchen fighting Polio.
Later, in life when most of the family were scattered across Canada, we had many picnics when the corn was at its prime. Peter along with Bill Palmer, not only arranged to provide the corn, but to cook it also to perfection.
Later on, when the four older boys left to work elsewhere, Peter was in charge of the family farm when father was away Christmas treeing in N.S. Also, in fathers later years, Peter drove father around for many years in N.S. where the trees were cut and, in the summer, in some of the Northern States where father was getting orders to sell the trees to wholesalers and retailers. Peter, near Christmas travelled to the Newark train yards to sell Christmas trees that father had shipped by freight train. Peter was a great help to father, especially after the older boys left the farm.
One, now must be positive. Peter will now be free of pain and will be able to join family and friends in heaven
Peter had a long productive life and now may he rest in peace.
Love to all
Ian A. Reid, one of Peter’s older brothers

I was so sad and even shocked to hear of Pete’s passing and am thinking of you all at this time. I know at 89, I should not be shocked but Pete was a constant – always there –for his family, friends, members of his church and community and even strangers – it seems I always thought he would be. I do not remember our first meeting - as I was two - but I am certain it was at the door of the Church. I do not recall every stepping into the Church and not being greeted by him. In fact, after I left Norton and would return, it was one of my life’s little pleasures – stepping into the Church, seeing Pete standing there, upright, a small grin (not a smile but a grin), a little nod and if I was lucky (and I usually was) a few words. After moving to Norton, mom and dad and Lil and Pete became fast friends – the closest of friends – despite their rivalry over the crib board. Then of course, there were the years of my childhood and teens that Wendy and I were joined at the hips and the Reids house was my second home. Oh the shenanigans. Over the years, Pete “tolerated” a lot (and I mean a lot) from us but he rarely got angry. If he did, without speaking a word, we knew it – if he actually spoke a word, we knew we were in real trouble. He wasn’t one to travel but he took us to Buttermilk Ridge for ice cream so many Sunday afternoons, to the maple sugar camps so many winters, to the blueberry fields so many summers and on a few "big" trips to the Gathering of the Clans in Pugwash. He insisted that we help “hay” although I am certain that we were no help but just along for the ride (on the top of the hay trailer). He was so kind, generous, modest, intelligent, funny, reliable and caring. He showed how he cared perhaps more than he spoke it but few people in this world could show it better and more often than he. There are no words that adequately express how much he gave – without ever being asked or taking anything in return - to mom and I. Pete is one of a handful of people who were responsible for mom remaining in her home for ten years. One of handful of people who were there for her when I couldn’t be. The comfort and security that this gave both mom and I were immeasurable. How many times did I hear mom say “I don’t know what I would do without Lil and Pete”. She didn’t have to worry because they were always there for her. He was always there for her. Well, I guess this message has come full circle from “a constant” to “always being there”. I know his “loss” will be a very very difficult one for you but I hope you take great comfort in knowing how much he loved you and knew he was loved by you, how fortunate you were to have had him in your lives as long as you did as a husband, father and grandfather and the many years of WONDERFUL memories. He was a very special man and I am so thankful to have known him and had him in my life. There is so much more I could say but will end with this … I hope there are crib boards in heaven! All my love, Debbie
