Obituary of Robert Gilchrist

At the Saint John Regional Hospital on May 25, 2015, lovingly surrounded by his family, we sadly announce the unexpected death of Robert (Bob) Lee Gilchrist, husband of Carolyn (Hodgin) Gilchrist of Norton, NB. He was born on September 1, 1933, in Littleton, ME, the son of the late Colin and Bertha (Campbell) Gilchrist of Riverbank, NB. The family soon moved to Midland where he spent his childhood years growing up on the family farm. During Robert’s working years he did a variety of jobs including working in the lumbering industry, picking tobacco, and harvesting Christmas trees. In his later years he worked with NB Electric Power Commission, and Department of Transportation retiring after 18 years of service. Robert enjoyed the outdoor life from hunting, camping and attending music festivals through the summer. One of his greatest pastimes during his retirement was spending time in his garden where he enjoyed giving vegetables to neighbors and boasting of his potato crops and his large carrots. He also enjoyed country drives with his wife and surrounding himself with children who all referred to him as "Grampie". He is survived by his loving wife; daughters Brenda, Shelley and David Scott, Michelle and Leslie Sterling and Tammy and Tom Friars; son Gary and Elizabeth; ten grandchildren; Brandon, Dawnie, Dodge, Lee, Connor, Colin, Christian, Tyler, Mitchell and Wyatt; sister Mary and Bill Reicker of Moncton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers Donald, Murray, Dalton and Jim. He is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service, conducted by Rev. Tom Robinson, will be held at 1:00 pm., Friday, May 29, 2015, from Norton Wesleyan Church 676 Route 124 Norton. Interment will follow in Riverbank Cemetery. Donations to Sussex Dialysis Unit or the memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated. Condolences to the family may be made through www.sherwoodsfuneralhome.com
