Obituary of Jim Gilchrist

It is with sadness, that the family of James Albert Gilchrist, of Norton, NB, husband of the late Erma Gilchrist, announces his death which occurred at the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, NB on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the age of 77. He was born on November 04, in 1937, a son of the late Colin and Bertha (Campbell) Gilchrist of Riverbank, NB. Jim began his childhood in Riverbank, then moving to Midland; spending most of his years growing up there on a family farm. Jim married the love of his life, Erma Tays, on July 28, 1962. They moved to Norton in 1964 where they lived their lives together and raised their three children, Colleen Ruth, James Christopher and Robert Gordon. Jim spent his life as a husband, father, and grandfather, dedicating himself to his family. He loved spending time with his family and was always at Erma’s side planning, organizing and attending family gatherings. His grandchildren, Cole, Hannah, Claire, Matthew, Jonathan, and Joshua, were such a source of pride and joy for him. He took such an interest in their activities and accomplishments and took part in as many events as he could. He would often be heard talking to people about his children and grandchildren and held such pride and love for them. Jim was very involved in his Church, St. Andrew’s United, in Norton, wherein he held many roles over the years. He was active within the community and government and participated eagerly in working with others for the betterment of these. He was proud of his community and was always willing to lend a helping hand in any endeavor. Over the years, Jim worked at a wide variety of jobs, including: logging, picking tobacco and potatoes, harvesting Christmas trees, cemetery care taker, Irving shipbuilding and 30 years with the Department of Transportation as an equipment operator and roads worker. Jim enjoyed hunting, walking, and gardening, and in recent years would spend countless hours enjoying the outdoors as he swung in the swing on the deck at his house in Norton. Special interests were making his beautiful Christmas wreaths each winter and nurturing his vegetable garden and flowers each summer. Jim is survived by his daughter Colleen and Wayne Winchester of St. Stephen, NB; sons Jamie and Donna Gilchrist of Norton, NB, Rob and Paula Gilchrist of Ottawa, ON; grandchildren Cole, Hannah, Claire, Matthew, Jonathan, Joshua, his brother Robert and Carolyn Gilchrist of Norton, NB, and sister Mary and Bill Reicker of Moncton, NB, and several nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his much loved furry companion, Lassie. He is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Sunday, March 29 at 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm.
