Obituary of Swanie Davis

It is with sadness, the family of Svanhild "Swanie" Davis, age 95, announces her death, at the Kiwanis Nursing Home, on January 30, 2015. The wife of the late Fraser Davis, of HatfieldPointNB, Swanie was born on September 11, 1919 in Øysletta, Norway, the daughter of the late Håkon and Olise (Skjelbred) Thorsen (Toresen). Swanie is survived by her children, Ron Davis and Beth (Rick) Reicker of Hatfield Point; grandchildren: Matt (Angela) Guptill, Rory (Tanya) Reicker and Ryan (Laura) Reicker; great-grandchildren: Megan, Owen, Ethan, Ayda, Macey Guptill and Austin and Hailey Reicker; sister-in-law, Ina Thorsen; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband, Swanie was predeceased by her brother, Jurne Thorsen. Swanie attended school in Øysletta until she was almost 11. In May of 1931, Swanie, her younger brother, Jurne and their parents immigrated to Canada – settling in the Grant to live. Swanie attended school in the Grant and after her final year of education, at the one-room schoolhouse, went to work in Saint John and then Salisbury and Sussex as domestic help. Swanie married Frase Davis in July 1937 in Lower Millstream and they were married for 54 years, living all of their married life on the Davis family farm in Hatfield Point. They made a living with various farming endeavours - in the late 40’s and early 50’s they maintained a small dairy herd of Jersey cows and for part of that time, sold milk and cream throughout the village. In the early years of their marriage, Swanie often looked after the livestock while Frase worked in Maine. In 1950’s Swanie started working at the Hatfield Point Post Office, which was located in Burt Short’s store. When the store closed the Post Office was moved to their home and eventually to the current site in the mid 60’s. She was Post Mistress until her retirement in 1983. Swanie always sewed some, but knitting was her greatest hobby. She was the proud winner of first prize one year, with socks, at the Gagetown Fair. Mom grew beautiful geraniums, and they brightened many winters with their blooms from the sunporch windows. Mom loved horses and often went riding. She was sure that German Shepherds were the only dog to have and over the years several were her constant companion. Swanie made her first trip back to visit family in Norway in 1958 and took many trips after that. Her last trip was in 2002 at the age of 83. Although she was content to have made her life in Hatfield Point, Norway was always "over home" to her and she kept close contact with her family there and never lost her ability to speak the language of her birth. She is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton with visitation on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm. The funeral service, conducted by Rev. Dwight Cole, will be held from OutreachPentecostalChurch, Hatfield Point, at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 4 2015. Interment will take place in the spring at BayviewCemetery, Hatfield Point. Donations in memory of Swanie may be made to the BayviewCemetery, Kiwanis Nursing Home, the Alzheimer’s Society, or to a memorial of the donor’s choice.
