Obituary of Eldred Beers

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Eldred E. Beers, age 95, husband of Doris (Thomas) Beers, of Saint John, and formerly of Wickham, NB, at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing in West Saint John on Friday, February 7, 2014. He was born in Emmerson, NB, on September 5, 1918, the son of the late Herbert and Hesba (Young) Beers of Harcourt, NB. He is survived by his wonderful and loving wife of 69 years, Doris; two daughters Linda (Craig) Parker of Grand Bay-Westfield and Lois (Mike) Gillespie of Saint John; son Donald (Danita Fanjoy) of Rothesay; seven grandchildren Tracy Parker, Sheri Parker-Brown, David Parker, Melody Mercer, Matthew Beers, Lindsay Beers, and Alex Beers; five great grandchildren Katelyn Parker, Ava Rose Brown, Mason Brown, Lila Parker and Lexie Beers; two sisters Gladys Templeton and Marilyn MacDonald both of Riverview; one brother Gordon of Moncton; son-in-law Milton Kinnear; sister-in-law Theresa Beers; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter Joan Evelyn Kinnear of Centreville; one sister Dorothy Beers and three brothers Harry, Carman and Donald. Eldred served for five years (1939-1944) in the Canadian Army 4th Battery, 3rd (NB) Coast Brigade, where he worked on the huge guns protecting the shorelines of the Bay of Fundy. He was stationed at Fort Mispec, Partridge Island, Martello Tower, Fort Howe and the Breakwater. As a result of receiving a serious back injury, Eldred was discharged from the Army in January 1944. Eldred married the love of his life Doris Thomas in March 1944. He worked in the lumber camps cutting logs until he and Doris purchased their farm in 1947. At Wickham. He spent most of his entire life working the land with his team of horses, until he got more modern farming equipment (tractors etc). Growing grain, cutting grass to feed more than 20 milking cows and shipping cream to the Sussex Cheese and Butter Factory kept him busy for many years. Eldred also fixed and repaired mostly Pioneer chain saws after completing his farming chores well into the early hours of the morning. He turned to a herd of beef cattle which he kept for many years. Eldred did not retire in his 70’s and continued doing lots of work on the farm land. Each summer he grew one of the best vegetable gardens in Wickham, where he supplied and gave away more vegetables than he needed for himself. Eldred loved his roses. He grew a great variety of them and was always looking for another variety of them to put in his garden. He was always very proud of his perennial garden. Eldred was always working at something. He could never relax and take it easy. He was always full of lots energy and on the go. Eldred was the local barber for the community. On Saturday night there was always a long lineup for haircuts. He was the centre person in his community for taking the Sunday School group on sleigh rides. He made many bonfires, clearing snow on the marsh to allow the children to have skating parties. His hills and fields were the attraction for all kids in the community for sledding and toboggan rides. Eldred was a very outgoing and wonderful person who will be missed by all who knew him. He put his family and everyone who knew him before himself. Arrangements entrusted to Sherwood's Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre, 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, E5T 1Z2, Tel: 506-839-2156 or (800-435-6644) with visiting on Sunday, February 9, 2014, from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm.
