Obituary of Ron Monahan

The death of Ronald Vincent Monahan, age 84, husband of Mary (McCamon) Monahan, of Southfield, NB, occurred at his residence on Sunday, December 29, 2013. He was born on December 15, 1929, in Quebec, the son of the late Edward and Edna (Baldwin) Monahan. Ron was born in La Tuque, Quebec, during the beginning of the great depression. After losing his mother at the young age of three, Ron’s father moved his family back to the family homestead in Southfield, New Brunswick. There, Ron his father and his siblings lived with their grandparents until their death. Ron spoke fondly of his days attending the one room schoolhouse in Southfield. Ron’s life would take another turn when he lost his father when he was 14. Ron and his siblings remained in Southfield for a few years before going their separate ways - Frank to St. John’s, Newfoundland, Ron to Hamilton, Ontario, and John to Montreal, Quebec, leaving Norma the only sibling remaining in Southfield. It was in Ontario that Ron enjoyed a career as an amateur boxer and steel worker at Dofasco Steel. It was also in Ontario that Ron met Mary, who had immigrated to Canada from Scotland. The two married and began their family. It was with a growing family of 8 children that Ron and Mary made the move from Ontario to New Brunswick. They added three more children to the family in New Brunswick and raised them in the home that Ron lived in as a child. The home that has been in the Monahan family name since 1885. In New Brunswick, Ron made his living as a woodsman, with a bit of farming on the side. There is no doubt; Ron’s greatest source of pride was his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the goings on at the Irving Saw Mill from his sons, or hearing about his grandchildren’s accomplishments. Ron will be dearly missed. Ron is survived by sons John Monahan of Southfield, Michael and Joyce Monahan of Picadilly, Ronald Monahan of Drury’s Cove, and Steven Monahan of Southfield;; daughters Edna Monahan of Fredericton, Linda Monahan of Pennfield, Patricia and David Kennedy of Sussex Corner, Susan and Camille Leger of Moncton, Ellen Monahan of Southfield, Laura Monahan of Halifax and Colleen Monahan of Hamilton, ON; 15 grandchildren Jeff (Mindy), Jamie (Samantha), John (Sacha), Ronald, Scott (Kara), Christopher, Kelsey (Andrew), Michael, David, Cody, Stacy (Gordon), Victoria, Craig (Carrie), Ryan and Chad; 18 great grandchildren, Jesse, Jayson, Sarah, Reese, Molly, Keenan, Patrick, Felicity, Jacob, Miley, Theresa, Veronica, Angilia, Logan, Bryden, Kayley, Casey, and Savannah; brother Frank Monahan of Newfoundland; sister-in-law Alice Monahan of Montreal; several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brothers Bernard and John; and sister Norma Cummings. He is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre, (506-839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, with visiting on Thursday, from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm.
