Obituary of Audrey Akerley

The death of Audrey Claire (Smyth) Akerley, wife of The Rev. Canon George Akerley, age 82, of Rothesay and formerly of Hatfield Point, occurred at the Kings Way Care Centre on August 9, 2013. She was born in Detroit, MI, on June 12, 1931, the daughter of the late Bennett and Evelyn (Fraser) Smyth. She is survived by her husband; daughters Margaret (Neil) Akerley of Rothesay, Suzanne (Ed) Valiant of Halifax, Heather (Mike) Cowie of Halifax; son John (Terri-Lynn) Akerley of Saint John; grandchildren: Matthew, Katie, Stephanie, Amy, Chase and Haillea; great grandchildren: Bailey, Kylie and Kyreese; sisters-in-law Betty Pickle, Margaret Lafond and Janet Simpson; nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her son Bruce; sisters Merle and Shirley; sister-in-law Jean Thompson. Audrey’s childhood was spent growing up in Halifax; she attended Kings College and Dalhousie University. While there she enjoyed playing field hockey, meet the love of her life (George) and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Education degree. Once married George and Audrey moved to New Brunswick where they settled and raised their 5 children. Audrey’s chosen career was teaching and she taught at various schools throughout the province. Most of her career though was spent at Dennis Morris school teaching grade 5. Audrey was a deeply involved in the church and was a member of many church organizations. She had a great passion for teaching Sunday school. Audrey was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Audrey was loved by all and touched a great many of our lives in a very profound way. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Visiting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, on Monday from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at 11:00 am from Trinity Anglican Church, Springfield, followed by interment in adjoining cemetery.
