Obituary of Frank Arris

The unexpected death of Francis (Frank) Baker Arris, age 81, husband of the late Gloria (Carse) Arris of Apohaqui, formerly the proprietors of the Eveleigh Hotel, Evandale, NB, occurred in the am on July 21, 2012 in Morpeth, NE England, while he was visiting family for the month of July, 2012.. He was born on October 15, 1930, in Sheepwash, Northumberland, England, the son to the late Isaac and Margaret (Baker) Arris. Frank immigrated to Canada with his wife and eldest son in 1957. We are greatly saddened by the news of the sudden and unexpected passing of Francis (Frank) Baker Arris, age 81, in Morpeth, England on July 21, 2012 while he was visiting family for the month of July. He was born on October 15, 1930 in Sheepwash, England, the eldest son of the late Isaac and Margaret Arris. Frank was brought up in a farming community on the outskirts of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in Northumberland, England during the hard times of WWII and the aftermath and as a result learned at an early age to be resourceful. He was given piano lessons as a child and eventually would often play the church organ for services until he was around 20 years of age. After meeting and marrying Gloria Lily (Carse), his wife of the next sixty years, Frank, Gloria and their eldest son John Francis immigrated to Canada in 1957. After relocating to Canada with his family, he proceeded to attain a higher education in Montreal, Que. by earning a Bachelors of Commerce Degree in Economics from Sir George Williams University and then earning his CMA (formerly RIA) after that - both of which he was very proud of achieving. He was also very satisfied with the work he and his wife Gloria did in the Boy Scouts of Canada organization during their years in Montreal, Que. He always said how proud he was of the 10-12 boys/young men that he mentored in the Boy Scouts program until they achieved the level of Venturers, one of which was his own son John Francis. Through his career as an accountant/comptroller, Frank and his family had the opportunity to live and work in many communities across Canada including Montreal, Edmonton, Toronto, Fredericton, Evandale, Calgary, and Apohaqui calling New Brunswick home for most of the last 36 years. He always felt comfortable in New Brunswick as he always said the terrain and the people that he met there reminded him of where he grew up in England. In 1975, the Arris’ became the proprietors of the Eveleigh Hotel in Evandale, NB which they owed and operated until 1992 where he became known for his accommodating ways, his political views (always tongue-in-cheek), and his delight in playing the organ for dining room guests upon request. He really enjoyed meeting and entertaining people at the hotel, and as he was a life-long student of human behavior he enjoyed interacting and getting to know all types of people near and far. During his time in Evandale, NB, Frank worked for a number of years at the Milk Marketing Board in Sussex as the controller and then eventually the Manager for the last 2 or 3 years he worked there. He often remarked that the NB Dairy Farmers were some of the best people he had ever met and worked with in his life and he was always very proud to be a representative of their organization. For most of his life, Frank was also a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and for many years he and his wife took pains to lay wreaths of remembrance on November 11th in memory of two of his uncles who were killed in action during WWII. He always said he felt privileged to be able to do it. After he retired from his working life, Frank and Gloria moved to Calgary, AB for 8 months of every year for about 12 years, so they could spend time with some of their children who moved there in the 1980’s and 1990’s until they finally moved back to Apohaqui, NB in late 2009. While in Calgary and after he retired, Frank took particular pleasure in cooking for his household and experimenting with different ingredients and spices to create magic on a plate most of the time. After Frank’s wife Gloria became mobility impaired due to medical issues in 2008, Frank gladly did most of the chores in the household and simultaneously took care of his wife until she passed away in 2011. After his wife Gloria passed away in 2011, Frank spent a number of months learning to live in a smaller household in Apohaqui, NB and within the year he adjusted to his new life well enough that he felt he was able to go visit his siblings and other family members in England in July, 2012 after not having visited there for about 10 years. On this trip he saw a lot of relatives and had a lot of fun visiting them, but sadly he passed away unexpectedly near the end of his trip. He is survived by his children John Arris of Apohaqui, NB, Keith Arris, Lynn Arris and Sylvia Marie Grant, of Calgary, AB and Nancy Clark, and her husband Brian of Evandale, NB. His grandchildren also survive him: Michael Durocher, and his wife Sandra of Kanata, ON, Gloria Lynn Arris and Amber Grant of Calgary, AB, Ryan and Richard Clark of Evandale, NB, and his great grandchildren Levi and Dyson Durocher of Kanata, ON, and Erich and Isaac Blair of Calgary, AB. He is also survived by his brother Isaac Arris and his wife Helen and his sister Margaret Ogglesby, both of Morpeth, England, his sister Roselle Bolton, and husband Bobby of Sheepwash, England, and his brother-in-law John Carse, and his wife Irene of Falstone, England, and also several nieces and nephews in England. He was predeceased by his much-loved wife of 60 years, Gloria Lily Arris, on February 25, 2011. He is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm, with a Legion Tribute starting at 6 pm. A celebration of Frank’s life, conducted by Celebrant Bill Sherwood, will be held at Sherwood’s Chapel at 11:00 am. on Friday, August 3, 2012. Donations are not necessary, but if donors wish, the family would prefer donations are made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the donor’s choice.
