Obituary of Herb Crawford
After a courageous battle with Lewy-Body Alzheimers, the death of Herbert Gamblin Crawford, age 71, husband of the late Shirley Pearl (Frazee) Crawford occurred at Embassy Hall, Shannex, Quispamsis, NB, on Friday, March 16, 2012. He was born in Saint John, NB, on February 2, 1941, the son of the late Herbert and Grace (Gamblin) Crawford
Dad trained as a mechanic and his first job was working at Russell Robertson's garage. Then he discovered his true calling and became a truck driver. First driving a tanker for Texaco, then later R&G where he picked up milk from farms. He worked there until his retirement in 2006. Steve and I, and then my kids, as well as many nieces and nephews used to love to go on his run with him. Shirley always packed a huge lunch, and to this day we have many happy memories driving along beside him.
He loved tinkering in his garage at home, and helped his children, as well as neighbors with work on their car. He never said no and was always happy to help whoever he could. Dad was a kind and generous man, and had a gentle spirit. He loved his family and we were so blessed to have him for our Dad and my children to have such a wonderful Papa. He never missed a ballgame the kids played in and they loved spending every minute they had with Nana and Papa.
Dad was a past fire chief of the Norton Volunteer Fire Department, and served 34 years as a member. He made life long friendships with those men. He also was a past Deacon of the Norton United Baptist Church.
Sixteen months ago, Dad lost his best friend Shirley and we know that they are together once again, where there is no disease, where they can once again be "Herb and Shirl". We would like to thank the entire staff of Embassy Hall for the care and love given to Dad (and also to Steve and I) these past 15 months. They are angels who have earned their wings on this earth, each and every one of them, and we are just so grateful Dad had you all to love him, and tease him and take such wonderful care of him. We will never forget you, your kindness, compassion and what you have done for our family.
We are going to miss that cute grin and twinkle in your eye and your dry sense of humor, that even through this terrible disease, remained unchanged. We are so proud to have called this wonderful man our Dad and Papa, but more than that, our friend.
He is survived by son Steven Crawford (Darren) of Saint John; daughters Susan and Stephen MacDonald of Norton, and Heather and Randy Justason of Pocologan; grandchildren Matthew and Chelsi Martin, Caleb MacDonald, Otty, Nick and Ina Justason; sisters Elva Orchard of Norton, and Margaret and Jim Swan of Old Town, ME; aunts Mary Dalton of Florida, and Bert and Bob Neal of Saint John; brothers-in-law Eldon Wilson of St. Stephen, Everett and Joanne Frazee of Midland; sisters-in-law Ruth and Bill Sherwood of Norton, Maddy and Winston McIntyre of St. Martins, Ina Frazee of Kiersteadville, Anna and Jim McCrea of Shannon and Helen and Walter Branscombe of Long Point; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
