Obituary of Leslie Cummings

The death of John Leslie Cummings, age 90, of Southfield, NB, occurred at the Sussex Health Centre on Saturday, May 14, 2011. The husband of the late Hazel (Totten) Cummings, he was born on July 23, 1920, in Salt Springs, NB, the son of the late Michael and Catherine (McGinnis) Cummings. Leslie was child number 13 of a large family of 15 children. Leslie spent his early years working in lumber camps and saw mills. Once he got married he spent his life farming and working in the woods. He had great faith in God. He worked hard all his life and instilled in his children a great work ethic. Leslie and his wife Hazel of 64 years spent many enjoyable hours entertaining friends and family. The family home "The Moosehorn" was a complimentary Bed and Breakfast , Lunch and Dinner for relatives from away. Many of the extended family spent summers haying and working and playing with the family on the farm. He loved them all. "Uncle Leslie" was almost another father figure to many nieces and nephews who would come to stay and visit. Leslie was accepting of all and had many friends over the years. He was one of the calmest people you could meet. He was a fine singer and loved music. In later years he was lucky to have a second family. His wonderful caregivers, who became very special to him. He loved hearing about their lives and playing radio bingo on Wednesday nights with them. Leslie is survived by his daughters Carol and Maurice Byrne of Southfield and Karen and Alan Pollock of Upham; sons Joe and Dorothy Cummings of Quispamsis, Terry and Joan Cummings of Norton, Stephen Cummings and Angela Rideout of Southfield; grandchildren Meagan and Maurice Byrne, Erin, Kristi and Lacey Pollock, Kelly and Colin Cummings, Chris and Andrew Cummings, Heather McEwen and Rosmarie Cummings-Brown, Gary Cummings, Jeffery Cummings, Jennifer Withers and Darryl Cummings; great grandchildren Matthew and Sara McEwen, Courtney Brown, Emily, Robyn and Garrett Cummings-Brown, Emma and Molly Cummings, Jacob and Lauren Cummings, Ty Withers, Warren and Anna Cummings; sister Rita McLaughlin; daughter-in-law Rita Cummings; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by sons Larry and Brian; grandson Jerry; and great granddaughter Grace; brothers William, Clarence, Leo, Sterling, Medley, Howard; sisters Alice Carty, Elizabeth Ross, Agnes Carty, Lillian Hourihan, Lulu Hourihan, Ruby Hourihan, Bernice Cummings. He is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Monday from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norton, at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Norton, NB. Donations to the Extra Mural Program, Sacred Heart Cemetery or the memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
