Obituary of Freda McLaughlan

The death of Freda Marguerite (Lamb) McLaughlan, age 87, occurred at Bobby’s Hope House, Saint John, NB, on Monday, February 21, 2011. Freda was the wife of the late William McLaughlan. She was born on April 20, 1923, in Reeds Point, NB, the daughter of the late Albert and Marguerite (White) Lamb. Freda was born and raised at Reeds Point on the Kennebecasis River. As a girl growing up she enjoyed spending time with her Grandmother White and would walked to Centerton to stay with her for days at a time. She enjoyed going to dances with her sister and cousins which were held on the Peninsula. She graduated from MacDonald’s Consolidated School at Kingston and attended Trinity Anglican Church. After graduating she worked at Robbins Drug Store in Saint John and also worked as a Nanny and Housekeeper. She married Bill at the Trinity Anglican Church in Saint John in 1946 and settled down in Saint John before moving to Renforth. After giving birth to a son and daughter they moved to Belleisle Creek to take over the Family Homestead and farm. She gave birth to two more daughters and spent her time raising her family. Freda and Bill enjoyed traveling as well as playing crib, Yatzee and 45’s. In later years Freda loved to quilt and was extremely modest about her work. She loved her hot house and gardening, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed country music and TV Games shows. She made the most awesome beets and chow! She loved to feed the birds including the crows saying they need to eat too! Her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Freda is survived by her son Brian and Joy McLaughlan of Belleisle Creek, NB; daughters Marlene and Bruce Wagstaff of Belleisle Creek, NB, Sandra and Dick Green of White’s Cove, NB, Elaine McLaughlan and Tom Belyea of Belleisle Creek, NB; grandchildren Allan McLaughlan, Nancy McLaughlan, Heather & Kevin Bernard, David Wagstaff, Pam and Dave Cole, Kevin Wagstaff, Justin Green, Aiden Green, Mandy and Jacques Lirette, Shane Sprague; great grandchildren Naika and Robert McLaughlan, Makayla and Austin Cole, Colton and Miya Bernard, Madeline McLaughlan, Sydney Green, Paige and Logan Lirette; sister Winnifred Northrup; sisters-in-law Dina (Norman) Dykeman, Elizabeth McLaughlan, and Audrey Lamb; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers James and Charles and sister Helen. She is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service, conducted by Rev. Tom Robinson, will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2011, at 11:00 am., from Kings Kirk United Church, Belleisle Creek, NB. Interment will take place in Union Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Freda, may be made to Hospice of Greater Saint John (Bobby’s Hope House), Cancer Society or the memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
