Obituary of Irene Haugen

M. Irene Haugen, née Crowe, passed away on November 6, 2010, at the age of 105, surrounded by loving care givers at the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre in Hampton, NB. She was born on August 17, 1905 in Hammondvale, NB, the daughter of the late William and Bridget (Mahoney) Crowe. Irene leaves numerous cousins and friends to celebrate her extraordinary life. She was a teacher for seven years but her true vocation was nursing. A born caregiver, she graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1933 and was class valedictorian. As a student nurse she once cared for Brother André and she rejoiced at his canonization two weeks ago. Irene traveled and worked throughout the States, meeting her beloved Peter, in Alaska, in her 50’s. He died after 19 years of marriage. Peter and Irene loved to travel including several visits to his relatives in Norway. She moved back to New Brunswick in 1986 and continued to give care as a volunteer. Irene was most generous, quietly giving to numerous charities, with a special place in her heart for children and the poor. Irene was a blessing to the Snow Centre for the past four years, teaching by example the values of kindness, tenacity, graciousness, humility, simplicity and humor. “ My needs are few” she often said, and “Thank you for what you did”. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Norton, NB, on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at 10 am, followed by interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Irene would appreciate donations to the Snow Centre Residents’ Bus Fund or the memorial of the donor’s choice.
