Obituary of Doris Monahan
The death of Doris Elizabeth (McGinnis) Monahan, age 86, occurred at the Sussex Health Centre, Sussex, NB, on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Doris was the wife of the late (Joseph) LeRoy Monahan. She was born on May 24, 1924, in Southfield, NB, the daughter of the late John and Annie (Campbell) McGinnis.
Doris, affectionately known as Dorie, grew up on the old McGinnis homestead in Southfield with her brothers, Earl, Gerald, Willy and Joe and sisters, Agnes and Ruth. At an early age, they all learned to take care of each other following the death of their father, a trait they carried on throughout their lives. She quietly passed on her work ethics and family values once she started her own family with her husband, Roy.
As a young woman growing up on the farm, Dorie perfected her firm handshake by driving teams of horses and oxen. Over the years, she has shown that she can turn her hand to any task, including sewing, carpentry, cooking, knitting and gardening.
Dorie looked forward most to her Sunday get-togethers with the family followed by Sunday night bingo with her daughters, and Betty, her good friend and neighbour. Christmas was always her favorite time of year. She decorated the house and had the family over for a traditional dinner followed by a competitive card game of 45's. She loved hockey from an early age and was the biggest Detroit Red Wings fan, with both Gordie Howe and Stevie Yzerman being permanent fixtures in the Monahan home.
Dorie was proud of all the achievements of her children and many grandchildren and could always be counted on to encourage and support them. She had an enormous love for all her family, including the close bond she developed with her sisters-in law, whom she considered her best friends.
She looked forward to family reunions where she enjoyed hearing her brothers, nephews and nieces singing and playing some favorite Irish and country songs- "Waltz Across Texas" and "When God Comes to Gather his Jewels", being two of her favorites. Dorie was always one of the last ones to leave any party and when asked if she was ready to go, her response was always " it's not over...", she never wanted to see it end.
During the past few years, as her health began to fail, Dorie was lucky enough to be able to stay at home with the help and support of her devoted family.
Dorie's sense of humor, smile and love will be forever missed by all those who knew her.
