Obituary of Jack Grant

The death of John (Jack) Grant, age 87, husband of Helen (Vail) Grant of Belleisle Creek, NB, occurred at the Sussex Health Centre, on Saturday, August 7, 2010. He was born in Inverness, Scotland, on August 31, 1922, the son of the late William and Christina (Bannerman) Grant. Dad came from Scotland to Canada at the age of nine on the SS Larentic in 1931. His father was a Guard at Edinburgh Castle before World War I. Dad moved to Springfield and lived in the Sterling Reicker house and later moved to the Baseline in the Grant. He and mom were married in 1945, after courting for four months. They built their house in the Grant, by using a pan of water for a level, when a keg of nails was $10, and a window was $12. Then they moved to Belleisle in 1956. Dad enjoyed his work whether it be working in John.T Neill’s Mill, piling deal, hauling pulp to Rothesay Pulp & Paper, farming, digging ponds or building roads with his dozer. Dad was a hard worker and taught us the same work ethics. He always had things ready long before he needed them. He would have his wood in long before the rest of us, and he would keep asking “Do you have your wood in yet?”. He loved being home and travelling the roads of Belleisle and Hatfield Point. The closest he got to Bermuda was Grand Manan. Dad was glad to see you come to visit, but if you stayed to late, he would say “Helen we better go to bed, these people may want to go home”. He was always glad to hear who got their moose license or doe tags, and planning for another moose trip. He loved all his animals, large and small, especially his dog Penny, who was never without a treat. His eyes would light up to see those little grandchildren coming in, and then out came the pink peppermints. They would all leave with some in their pockets. We will miss him dearly, cherish all our memories and share them with all of his grandchildren. Jack is survived by his wife Helen; sons Dave and Ina Grant of Hatfield Point, and Rick and Charlene Grant of Hatfield Point; daughters Ruth and Albert Jacobs of Westfield, Marj and Ivan Neill of Springfield, and Bonnie and Manfred Brauns of Sussex; 12 grandchildren Becky, Jennifer, Jaime, Stephanie, Ben, Vance, Mike, Naomi, Ginny, Tyler, Chelsey, and Louwill, ; 21 great grandchildren Jacob, Kate, Lucy, Brooke, Blake, Dylan, Abigail, Brandon, Erika, Sarah, Connor, Peyton, Owen, Hayden, Emma, Jill, Ryan, Megan, Jackson, Logan, and Violet; brothers Ed and Mabel Grant of Saint John, Christopher and Gert Grant of Saint John and Ronnie and Midge Grant of Toronto; sisters Ethel Cunningham of Toronto and Christina Hayward of Saint John; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Allister and Alfred Grant and Ronnie Bannerman; sisters Gladys McCormick and Joyce Gardiner. He is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home & Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Sherwood’s Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2010.
