Obituary of Russell MacDonald

It is with sadness that the family of Russell MacDonald announces that he died peacefully after a long illness on February 20, 2017 two days after his 89th birthday in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Russell was born on February 18, 1928 in McDonald’s Point, New Brunswick, the youngest son of the late John and Gladys (Craft) MacDonald. Russell left McDonald's Point to earn degrees from Acadia University and University of Michigan. Russell spent many years teaching and conducting research at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, retiring as Professor Emeritus of Molecular Biology. Upon retirement, Russell moved to New York City to continue working on AIDS research and enjoying the big city life. Later he moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he lived during his final years. Russell spent virtually every summer at the family home that his father built in McDonald's Point and he always spoke about how he truly came alive when he returned home. Russell loved all things science, gardening, cooking, poetry and plays, debating politics, travel and fighting the good fight. Russell is survived by his children: Andrew MacDonald and his wife Christine of Boston, Massachusetts, Erik MacDonald and his wife Carolyn of Beaverton, Oregon and Jane MacDonald of Fairchild, Wisconsin; granddaughters: Annabel, Viola and Marit; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Russell was predeceased by his brother Jack. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB. Following a private graveside service at McDonald’s Point Cemetery, all are welcome to a reception and a chance to share stories about Russell at 3:00 pm on July 2nd, 2017 at 33 McDonald's Point Road in McDonald's Point. Donations in memory of Russell may be made to the McDonald’s Point Cemetery or to the memorial of the donor’s choice.
