Obituary of Velma DeLong

With great sadness the family announce the death of Velma Bernice (Totton) DeLong, age 91, wife of the late Harry DeLong, of Norton, NB, which occurred at home on Sunday, February 26, 2017. She was born in Salmon Creek, NB, on March 31, 1925, the daughter of the late George and Pearl (McBride) Totton, Velma attended Modern Business College in Saint John and worked as a stenographer at Captor II Naval Base. Following the war she worked as a civil servant at the DVA processing discharges for returning soldiers. She left her job to marry. She was a member of the Anglican Church, long time member of the ACW, NB Historical Society, and a life member of the Women’s Institute. Velma’s sewing, cooking, quilting, craft, and painting skills were exceptional. Her love of her family and community showed in her daily life. She was very proud of her great grandchildren and Carter. Birthdays and parties weren’t complete without her baking, especially her chocolate cakes with boiled icing. Velma was able to remain in her own home when in failing health with the help of her grandson David. Velma is survived by her daughter Donna Muir of Midland; grandchildren Debora Fenton and David Desruisseau; great grandchildren Jeffrey and Gina Fenton; great-great grandson Carter; sisters-in-law Linda Totton and Florence Totton; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Willis, George, Basil, Gerald, Vern, Garnet and Oakley; sisters Velzora and Leota; sons-in-law Ray Desruisseau and David Muir. Visitation will take place at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service will be held from St. Simon & St. Jude’s Anglican Church, Belleisle Creek, NB, at 2:30 pm, on Thursday, March 2, 2017. Interment in Riverbank Cemetery will take place in the spring. Donations in memory of Velma may be made to St. Simon & St. Jude’s Anglican Church, the Extra Mural Fund or the memorial of the donor’s choice.
