Obituary of Marie Mason

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mom at the Sussex Health Centre on Tuesday evening. After a relatively short illness she was released to a better place. Mom was a strong, independent and caring person who raised two children on her own after the sudden passing of her husband Stan Mason in 1965. She worked hard as a widowed mother to provide a safe and happy home for us – it was never easy but she never complained and for her love we will always be grateful. She worked a variety of jobs over the course of time, including retail fashion, insurance and perhaps her favourite, bartending at the legendary Keyhole club where she met countless new friends who she loved seeing in Sussex and surrounding areas in later years . Mom loved her family and friends deeply, and was never happier than when she was spending time with them, whether it was on trips to PEI and further afield, or in Belleisle Creek, where music and laughter were never in short supply. Mom’s place was always welcoming to anyone who dropped in to visit. Her hospitality was genuine and generous. Mom loved her kids and treasured her grandchildren and was willing and eager to sing their praises to the many good friends she had in her life, friends who loved her for her honesty and humour. Mom was the daughter of Esther and Hedley Vail. She is survived by her daughter Joanne Scarlett (Tony) and son Brent Anthony (Sandra), as well as, her grandchildren Mason McLeod, Troy Gallagher, Isaac, Maria and Matthew Mason. She is also survived by her brother Randall (Glenna), as well as, many nieces and nephews who she thought the world of. She was predeceased by her siblings Clifford, Irene, Etta, Marion and Sedley. Mom had many great friends, but we would like to especially thank Lynn and Fred Vail who were so helpful in providing care and comfort over the last months – she was very thankful for your support. The family will receive visitors at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, from 2 to 5 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2017. Donations in memory of Marie may be made to Camp Kerry or the memorial of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences to the family and donations may be made through SherwoodsFuneralHome.com.
