Obituary of Ethel Smith

It is with great sadness the family of Ethel Alberta Smith, age 94, wife of the late Gerald F. Smith, of Lower Cambridge, NB, announces her death which occurred at the Oromocto Public Hospital on April 5, 2016 with her dear friend Margaret-Ann Ashfield by her side. Born in Cambridge, NB, on July 10, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Susie (Camp) Black. After graduating from Normal School, Ethel’s first teaching position was at the Central Cambridge one room schoolhouse (grades 1 through 8). After marrying Gerald she became a teacher at the one room schoolhouse in Lower Cambridge (grades 1 through 8). When Cambridge Rural High School opened, her home room became grade 8, but she would occasionally teach students in other grades as well. She often remarked that she’d taught for 36 years 4 months & 2 days. Ethel was always a quiet and unassuming lady. We never knew until just a few years ago that she had won a trophy playing tennis while attending Normal School. Ethel loved to sew, knit and crochet but she especially loved family. She enjoyed reading and also keeping up to date on newsworthy issues. Ethel spent her last two years residing with her daughter and granddaughter where she especially enjoyed watching the little birds feeding at the window and her geese wandering in the field toward the shore. She was a charter member of the LCWI; Sunday school teacher and church organist for many years. Ethel loved her Lord & Savior, and during her last few months, she looked forward to her Heavenly home. Ethel is survived by her daughter Marie Perry of Lower Cambridge, NB; granddaughter Dawn Perry of Lower Cambridge, NB; sisters-in-law: Joyce Smith of Kingston, ON, and Effie Smith of Avon Park, FL; nephews: Gordon and Barbara Black, Donald and Marlene Black and Alvin and Dora Smith; niece Diane and John Osborne; as well as several grand and great grand nephews and nieces and cousins. Besides her parents and her loving husband of 69 years, Ethel was predeceased by her infant sister Beulah Black; brother Arthur Black and his wife Evelyn; son-in-law Ronald Perry; and brothers-in-law Douglas and Llewellyn Smith. She is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre, (839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, with visiting on Friday from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 pm. The Funeral service conducted by Rev. Philip Penny will be held from Sherwood’s Chapel at 2:00 pm, on Saturday, April 9, 2016. A private family interment will take place in First Cambridge Baptist Cemetery. Donations in memory of Ethel may be made to the First Cambridge Baptist Cemetery, Canadian Cancer Society or to the memorial of the donor’s choice.
