Obituary of Lilly Barnes
Lilly May Barnes passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, at the Kiwanis Nursing Home in Sussex, at the age of 93.
Born on May 13, 1932, in Belyea’s Cove, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late George and Annie (Logue) Mott. She spent most of her life in McDonald’s Point, where she and her husband built their life together.
Lilly married Lawrence Barnes on August 12, 1950. They shared many happy years together, especially enjoying time outdoors—whether it was trips to Fundy National Park to go lawn bowling or days on the Washademoak Lake swimming and boating. In the winter, they kept just as active skating and cross-country skiing. Lawrence passed away in 2012, just before their 62nd anniversary.
She was the mother of Elaine Vroom (Brian), who passed away in 2011, and Randy Barnes (Betty Cole). Lilly was a proud grandmother to Kim, Wade (Kristin), Marcy (Joe), and Miranda (Shawn), and she took great joy in her great-grandchildren—Erika, Tyler, Zack, Shae, and Zoey—and her great-great-grandson, Theo. She was a steady and caring presence in their lives and truly loved being a grandmother.
Lilly is survived by her sisters, Ruth Norrad and Pat Samuelsen. In addition to her parents, husband and daughter, she was predeceased by her brothers Blake, Ivan, and Irvin, and her sisters Grace and Georgie.
She worked for many years at McDonald’s Farm, picking berries and apples and working in the greenhouse. She had a natural talent for plants and was well known for her beautiful flower baskets and planters. Lilly enjoyed bird watching—a hobby that she passed down to her grandchildren and great grandchildren - and always looked forward to bus tours with her friend Evelyn. From 1969 to 2016, Lilly kept a journal capturing the moments that made up her days.
Lilly will be remembered for her strong work ethic, her love for her family, and a life well lived.
