For anyone who was unable to make it to the funeral service I would like to share my memories poem that I read in honour of my Grampy…
For My Grandfather
We gather here with heavy hearts,
Yet grateful for the years,
For every quiet lesson taught
Through laughter, work, and tears.
You showed us love in simple ways—
A steady hand, a patient smile,
strength that never asked for praise,
But walked beside us mile by mile.
You built a life of truth and care,
A faith that carried through,
A life that pointed all of us
Toward what is good and true.
And though I teased you as a child
About that head so shiny and bare,
You always knew beneath the jokes
Was love beyond compare.
You met my jokes with gentle calm,
A smile, a knowing grin,
Teaching me that love shows up
With patience deep within.
When I stayed with you as a kid,
You offered what you loved—
Shredded wheat, that solid brick,
A breakfast sent from above.
I’d choke it down with all my might,
Each bite a quiet vow,
Not wanting to let you down then,
And smiling just like now.
I was such a city kid back then,
When you said, “Let’s walk to the store,”
I didn’t know that “down the road”
Meant miles… and maybe more.
I asked if we could take a cab,
To carry us back near,
You laughed and said, “Oh dear, my girl,
You’ll never find one here.”
One Christmas when I was very small,
Three or four, not much more,
You dressed up as Santa, beard and all,
And knocked right on that door.
I was so nervous, I ran away,
That Santa seemed so tall,
And from that day on,
I kept my distance from Saint Nick in the mall.
Still, looking back, I see it now,
Just how much love you gave,
To dress up just to make me smile,
A memory I’ll always save.
We trust today in God’s great promise,
That death is not the end,
For those who walk in faith and love
Are held in arms that mend.
On Valentine’s, the day of love,
You quietly took flight,
Surrounded by the hearts you shaped
And bathed in Heaven’s light.
Surrounded by the ones you held,
with prayers both soft and true,
As if the day itself declared
How deeply we loved you.
So we release you with our love,
Though parting makes us ache,
Until the day we meet again,
In Heaven, wide awake.
