Obituary of Len Andrews

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the family of Leonard Douglas Andrews announces his passing after a short battle with cancer. Len passed away on Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit in Fredericton, N.B.

Born in Saint John, N.B., on October 21, 1949, Len was a man whose laughter could fill a room and whose smile was unforgettable. He was kind, selfless, and always willing to lend a helping hand. His sense of humor and genuine compassion led him to a career as a firefighter, a role he cherished for 35 years with the Saint John Fire Department.

Len was one of the first two firefighters in New Brunswick to be awarded the NBMIA Medal of Valor for an act of heroic bravery. He served as Union President of the Saint John Firefighters Association IAFF Local 771, where he co-founded the Saint John Critical Incident Stress Management Program. Rising to the rank of Captain, Len was deeply committed to his fellow firefighters and their well-being. His dedication to service and his camaraderie with colleagues remained some of his most treasured memories.

Outside of firefighting, Len found peace and joy in the outdoors. He loved nature and could often be found watching the wildlife on his property. His home in Cambridge-Narrows was his sanctuary, a place where he enjoyed mowing the grass, taking family walks with their English Setter Netty, gathering around bonfires, feeding his hummingbirds, and driving his Polaris Ranger. Most importantly, it was in Cambridge-Narrows that he met his soul mate, the love of his life, Sonya. Their love was a true partnership, unwavering and unconditional.

Len’s greatest love was his family. His love and legacy live on through his beloved wife, Sonya (Belyea) Andrews, of 30 years, and their children, Rhoan Andrews and Grayson Andrews, who were his pride and joy. Len and Grayson spent countless hours together, side-by-siding, fishing, and bonding over their love for the outdoors. Len was Grayson’s biggest fan, never missing a basketball game. With Rhoan, Len enjoyed long drives, sharing wisdom, and imparting life lessons she will carry forward for generations. He took great pride in giving her a name that will now carry his memory forever. The love Len and Sonya shared will continue to live on through their children, a testament to the bond they built together.

Len is also survived by his children Lindsey Duguay (Kris), Leonard Andrews (Kalie), Shaylen Andrews, Caley Leinberger (Karl), and Jacob Andrews; his sister Janis Andrews; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Muriel (Brewster) Andrews; his brother, Ernest Andrews; and his sister, Lynn (Andrews) Donaldson.

Len will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit and as well as the 4 North West unit at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital for their outstanding care and compassion.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, N.B. A Celebration of Len’s Life will be held on May 3, 2025 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Cambridge-Narrows Municipal Building, 6 Municipal Lane, Cambridge-Narrows, N.B.
